Ch\u00ednh l\u00e0 b\u00e0i h\u00e1t vi\u1ebft v\u1ec1 qu\u00ea n\u1ed9i c\u1ee7a t\u00f4i: <strong>\u2018Th\u00e1i B\u00ecnh m\u1ed3 h\u00f4i r\u01a1i\u2019<\/strong> c\u1ee7a S\u01a1n T\u00f9ng M-TP. V\u00e0 t\u00f4i \u0111\u00e3 nghe \u0111i nghe l\u1ea1i b\u00e0i h\u00e1t n\u00e0y trong bu\u1ed5i s\u00e1ng c\u1ee7a l\u1ea7n \u0111\u1ea7u v\u1ec1 qu\u00ea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-contrast-color\"><em>Even though my grandparents and relatives all live in Hanoi, my parents were born in Hanoi, and our family has never really had the tradition of \u201cvisiting hometown\u201d, on paper, &#8220;I am still a child of Thai Binh&#8221;. Do you recognise this lyric? It comes from a song about my paternal hometown: \u2018Th\u00e1i B\u00ecnh m\u1ed3 h\u00f4i r\u01a1i\u2019 by S\u01a1n T\u00f9ng M-TP. I listened to this song over and over again on the morning of my first time visiting my hometown.<\/em><\/mark><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/heartsdieherzen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/thai-binh-mo-hoi-roi-son-tung-m-tp.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">T\u00f4i c\u00f3 mong mu\u1ed1n \u0111\u01b0\u1ee3c \u0111i du l\u1ecbch v\u1edbi \u00f4ng b\u00e0 c\u1ee7a m\u00ecnh. \u0110\u1ed1i v\u1edbi b\u00e0 n\u1ed9i th\u00ec \u0111i Trung Qu\u1ed1c ho\u1eb7c L\u00f4 L\u00f4 Ch\u1ea3i, l\u00e0 nh\u1eefng n\u01a1i b\u00e0 th\u00edch. \u0110\u1ed1i v\u1edbi b\u00e0 ngo\u1ea1i th\u00ec \u0111i m\u1ed9t n\u01a1i n\u00e0o \u0111\u00f3 c\u00f3 tuy\u1ebft theo \u00fd b\u00e0. For my paternal grandmother, it would be China or L\u00f4 L\u00f4 Ch\u1ea3i \u2014 places she likes. For my maternal grandmother, it would be somewhere with snow \u2014 as she wishes. And for my paternal grandfather, it would definitely be Th\u00e1i B\u00ecnh, where he was born. Although he has not visited his hometown very often in recent years, he still tells us grandchildren a lot of Th\u00e1i B\u00ecnh stories, with a strong passion for our family history. That made me curious about what the atmosphere of Th\u00e1i B\u00ecnh is like. T\u00f4i b\u1eaft \u0111\u1ea7u th\u1ee9c gi\u1ea5c khi nghe th\u1ea5y ti\u1ebfng n\u00f3i chuy\u1ec7n r\u00f4m r\u1ea3 c\u1ee7a \u00f4ng n\u1ed9i v\u00e0 anh t\u00e0i x\u1ebf. \u00d4ng k\u1ec3 cho anh nghe v\u1ec1 qu\u00ea h\u01b0\u01a1ng Th\u00e1i B\u00ecnh, gia t\u1ed9c c\u00f3 \u0111\u00f3ng g\u00f3p g\u00ec, c\u1ee5 H\u00e0m c\u1ee7a t\u00f4i (b\u1ed1 \u00f4ng n\u1ed9i) l\u00e0 ng\u01b0\u1eddi nh\u01b0 th\u1ebf n\u00e0o, song song v\u1edbi vi\u1ec7c l\u00e0m b\u1ea3n \u0111\u1ed3 b\u1eb1ng c\u01a1m. \u0110i tr\u00ean qu\u1ed1c l\u1ed9, \u0111i qua Nam \u0110\u1ecbnh, \u0111\u1ebfn \u0111\u00e2u \u00f4ng c\u0169ng c\u00f3 chuy\u1ec7n \u0111\u1ec3 k\u1ec3. \u00d4ng c\u00f2n ch\u1ec9 cho t\u00f4i bi\u1ebft l\u00e0ng qu\u00ea c\u1ee7a Tam Nguy\u00ean Y\u00ean \u0110\u1ed5, ng\u00f4i l\u00e0ng c\u1ee7a Ch\u00ed Ph\u00e8o, th\u00e1p b\u00fat, v\u00e0 con s\u00f4ng \u0110\u00e0o \u1edf V\u0169 Th\u01b0, Th\u00e1i B\u00ecnh. Sau n\u00e0y s\u00f4ng \u0110\u00e0o \u0111\u1ed5i t\u00ean th\u00e0nh s\u00f4ng V\u0129nh Tr\u00e0, c\u00f3 ngh\u0129a l\u00e0 V\u0129nh Long \u2014 Tr\u00e0 Vinh, do k\u1ebft ngh\u0129a v\u1edbi Th\u00e1i B\u00ecnh khi mi\u1ec1n B\u1eafc \u1ee7ng h\u1ed9 mi\u1ec1n Nam gi\u1ea3i ph\u00f3ng. \u00d4ng k\u1ec3 nhi\u1ec1u l\u1eafm, nh\u01b0ng n\u00e3o t\u00f4i ch\u1ec9 nh\u1edb \u0111\u01b0\u1ee3c c\u00f3 v\u1eady, ph\u1ea3i nghe l\u1ea1i v\u00e0i l\u1ea7n n\u1eefa m\u1edbi nh\u1edb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Just before 8AM, I arrived at my grandfather\u2019s house. He was already waiting outside. Without greeting me, he immediately took the book I was holding to see what I was reading \u2014 very tsundere, and very much a book lover.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>We got into the car and officially set off. For most of the journey, he sat quietly while I listened to music and slept. I woke up to hear him chatting enthusiastically with the driver, telling stories about his hometown Th\u00e1i B\u00ecnh, our family&#8217;s contributions, and his father, while also being a human Google Maps. As we passed along the highway through Nam \u0110\u1ecbnh, he pointed out places and landmarks, such as the \u0110\u00e0o River in V\u0169 Th\u01b0, whose name means &#8220;digging&#8221; river as it was digged by the locals, including my grandpa himself during a student movement. Nh\u01b0ng t\u00f4i th\u00edch nh\u1eefng g\u00ec \u0111\u1eb7c bi\u1ec7t. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Perhaps the history lesson I remember most from this trip is about my direct ancestor, great-grandfather H\u00e0m. On the car ride, great-grandfather Mu\u1ed9n told me, \u201cEveryone here loved Mr H\u00e0m. He&#8217;s not as stubborn as your grandpa Thanh or grandpa Th\u1ee5\u201d. Grandpa Thanh is my grandfather, and grandpa Th\u1ee5 is his older brother. Both are sons of great-grandfather H\u00e0m.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>My grandfather then told me that, in the past, great-grandfather H\u00e0m climbed a tall pole to raise a flag, openly defying the French colonial authorities. When they demanded it be taken down, the flag somehow flew to a place they couldn\u2019t reach. In the end, they arrested him and sent him to prison. I don\u2019t fully understand the physical logic of the story, but what stayed with me was the image of great-grandfather H\u00e0m himself. My grandfather also said he once held a fairly high administrative position in Th\u00e1i B\u00ecnh. From these stories, I imagined him with the gentle, polite face that I saw in old photos, paired with a fearless personality and a deep love for the country.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I felt proud and touched. That spirit clearly passed down through the generations. My grandfather himself was just as brave \u2014 a missile control engineer trained at Hanoi University of Science and Technology during the war. My father is even more fierce and adventurous. Used to be an architect with a love for drawing and photography, he took a plot twist into sports, bodybuilding, and dangerous expeditions into remote mountains. With personalities like that, my grandfather and father can be a bit \u201cdifficult\u201d and \u201cmean\u201d in daily life, to be honest. Haha. But I like what\u2019s different.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:395px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sao l\u1ea7n \u0111\u1ea7u v\u1ec1 qu\u00ea l\u1ea1i may m\u1eafn th\u1ebf n\u00e0y?<br>Gi\u1edd trong t\u00e2m tr\u00ed t\u00f4i, Th\u00e1i B\u00ecnh kh\u00f4ng ch\u1ec9 l\u00e0 &#8220;m\u00ecnh c\u00f9ng qu\u00ea v\u1edbi S\u01a1n T\u00f9ng M-TP&#8221; hay &#8220;n\u01a1i ng\u01b0\u1eddi ta n\u00f3i s, tr, r n\u1eb7ng&#8221;, m\u00e0 v\u00f9ng \u0111\u1ea5t n\u00e0y \u0111\u00e3 c\u00f3 c\u00e1 t\u00ednh. Th\u00e1i B\u00ecnh ho\u00e0 nh\u00e3, l\u1ecbch thi\u1ec7p, gi\u00e0u truy\u1ec1n th\u1ed1ng, nh\u01b0ng c\u0169ng r\u1ea5t hi\u1ec7n \u0111\u1ea1i, s\u00e1ng t\u1ea1o v\u00e0 c\u1ef1c k\u1ef3 d\u0169ng c\u1ea3m. \u1ede Th\u00e1i B\u00ecnh, ng\u01b0\u1eddi ta ra ngo\u00e0i kh\u00f4ng c\u1ea7n kho\u00e1 c\u1eeda, \u0103n u\u1ed1ng tho\u1ea3i m\u00e1i, t\u1ee5 h\u1ecdp \u0111\u00f4ng vui m\u00e0 l\u1ea1i r\u1ea5t l\u1ecbch s\u1ef1. L\u00e0 c\u1ea3m x\u00fac s\u00e2u s\u1eafc \u0111\u01b0\u1ee3c g\u1eafn b\u00f3 v\u1edbi m\u1ea3nh \u0111\u1ea5t v\u00e0 con ng\u01b0\u1eddi mang t\u00ean Vi\u1ec7t Nam, chuy\u1ec3n ho\u00e1 th\u00e0nh \u0111\u1ed9ng l\u1ef1c \u0111\u1ec3 tr\u1edf n\u00ean t\u1ed1t h\u01a1n m\u1ed7i ng\u00e0y, \u0111\u1ec3 \u0111\u00f3ng g\u00f3p cho c\u00e1i t\u00ean chung, \u0111\u1ec3 mang qu\u00ea h\u01b0\u01a1ng ra qu\u1ed1c t\u1ebf. Ch\u00fang ta c\u00f3 th\u1ec3 tranh c\u00e3i kh\u00f4ng h\u1ed3i k\u1ebft v\u1ec1 nh\u1eefng \u0111\u1ecbnh ngh\u0129a m\u00e0 kh\u00f4ng nh\u1eadn ra c\u1ea3m x\u00fac l\u1ea1i ch\u00ednh x\u00e1c h\u01a1n r\u1ea5t nhi\u1ec1u. Ch\u1ec9 c\u1ea7n b\u1ea1n c\u1ea3m nh\u1eadn th\u00ec b\u1ea1n s\u1ebd bi\u1ebft tinh th\u1ea7n \u1ea5y m\u1ea1nh m\u1ebd \u0111\u1ebfn th\u1ebf n\u00e0o.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>How come my first trip back to hometown was sooo lucky?<br>In my mind now, Th\u00e1i B\u00ecnh is no longer just \u201cthe place I share with S\u01a1n T\u00f9ng M-TP\u201d or \u201cwhere people pronounce s, tr, r very strongly\u201d. This land started to have a personality. Th\u00e1i B\u00ecnh is gentle and courteous, rich in tradition, yet also modern, creative, and very very courageous. Here, people go out without locking their doors, eat and drink freely, gather in large groups, while remaining polite and considerate. In the end, Th\u00e1i B\u00ecnh taught me about patriotism, integrity, and the spirit of unity from North to South \u2014 embodied in the presence of the V\u0129nh Tr\u00e0 River.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>A foreign friend once asked me how I would define Vietnamese \u201cnationalism\u201d. Well, this is what it is. It is a deep emotional bond with the land and people called Vietnam, transformed into the motivation to become better every day, to contribute to a shared identity, and to carry our name into the wider world. We can argue endlessly over definitions and miss the fact that emotions are often more accurate. I may not know which political system is best, but I believe in one simple question: are people happy? So I don\u2019t think Vietnamese nationalism needs a rigid definition. Sometimes, it is just a bowl of ph\u1edf or a national team football match.
